Fluffy Feathers

Last night, while Chris and Chase were outside, they came upon a brand new, baby bird.  He was lying in a gutter, literally shivering to death.  It was cold, rainy, and miserable.  There were no trees around, so we don’t know how he ended up in street.  The only reason Chris noticed the little bird, was from the movement he made while shivering.  I would be surprised if the bird was more than one day old.  The boys brought him inside, and made a comfy bed for him in a bin.  They dug for and cut up worms and fed little bits to him, using tweezers.  Chase fed sugar water to the little bird, with a medicine dropper.

I was gone while this was happening.  By the time I got home at 11 pm, they had nursed the little guy back to health.  They saved his life.  Chris wrapped a blanket around the bin, and set it on Chase’s lap in the backseat of my car.  We took him to a 24 hour animal hospital.  On the way, Chase kept me informed of Fluffy Feathers’ (Chase’s name for the bird) condition.  He was so attentive and concerned.  When we got to the hospital, Chase explained to the assistant exactly what happened- how they found him, his condition at the time, and the care they gave him.  He was clear and concise.  They took Fluffy to the back, while I filled out paperwork.  Our part was done and it was time for us to go.  When we got to the car, Chase said, “I didn’t get to say good-bye”.  We went back in and asked if they would let us see him one more time- of course, they did.  When they brought Fluffy out, Chase said, “Good-bye.  Good luck to you Fluffy”.

I am proud of my husband- I love the example he set for our boys last night.  I love the experience Chase had, helping someone (or something) in need.  Seeing Chris’ example of compassion, and showing so much himself.  Stepping up and doing something to make a difference for that little bird.  Because really, when people can show this much kindness, for one sweet little bird, it makes a big difference in the world.  My husband and my boys make the world a better place.  I am proud of them- and a bit in awe.

Can we ever teach Chase a better lesson than he learned last night? Does he even need us to… I think he has it all covered.

BTW- I called the animal hospital this afternoon to see if Fluffy made it through the night.  He did! They said he was hopping around his bin and chirping happily this morning! YAY!!!
