Chase is making many friends at his new school, he even has a play date with his new friend, Olan, next week. He enjoys this school, and homeschooling in general. He wants to continue next year as well. It’s more that he likes the playing and freedom, than the actual work. But, he is doing awesome with his studies and he told me today that he loves history and that his homework is usually fun! I really can’t ask for more than that.
His handwriting and spelling are improving significantly. I really haven’t made him do too many writing assignments, it’s mostly from writing his comics. Every couple of weeks I throw a practice writing exercise into his mix, and there has been consistent improvement. He is capitalizing when he’s suppose to (and sometimes when he’s not suppose to:) and using punctuation properly (for the most part). I try not to stress it too much, it seems like such a natural progression- I think it will all come together when it is meant to and when he’s ready. For the time being, I am more interested in what he’s writing than how he is writing- I just like seeing his thoughts and ideas on paper.
Right now I am trying to piece together our curriculum for next year. Using a boxed curriculum is restrictive and becomes mundane after a while. I like being able to pick and choose what we want to study, and how much of each topic we want to cover. Somethings are fun to really get in to and others we briefly touch upon and move on. We like books and stories more than textbooks- and I think that is the route we are going to go, just finding fun projects and field trips to go along with our lessons.
